Elisa Lam’s in Haunted Hotel Cecil

on .

There’s been an obscure mystery involving a missing Canadian woman skimming the local LA news. She went missing on January 31, but many of the details and attention have been diverted by the attention-grabbing Christopher Dorner fireworks show that has monopolized news coverage for most of February.

Elisa Lam, 21, was supposedly en route from her home in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Santa Cruz, California, but for an unknown reason, she ended up at the Hotel Cecil in downtown Los Angeles beginning January 26. The hotel is a legendary Los Angeles artifact which has been retrofitted to make it more hip and trendy, but the fact of the matter is that it sits in the middle of one of the seediest neighborhoods of Los Angeles proper, Skid Row. It is a bleak, apocalyptic area abundant with homeless people, drug addicts, and the ugliest prostitutes in the world. It’s an urban way station that is a temporary home to hordes of transient and criminal journeyers. Adding to the unbecoming nature of the Hotel Cecil is its dark history of murders, suicides and legendary hauntings. Richard Ramirez, the “Night Stalker” killer who terrorized Southern California in the 80s, stayed there for a while.

There’s a nice, chilling summary of the Hotel Cecil’s spooky history detailed in a post at “The Memories Project” blog and accompanied by some personal anecdotes about sinister experiences at the hotel.

Today they released a video taken from an elevator security camera at the Hotel Cecil that documents the last known images of Lam taken on January 31. Lam enters the elevator and begins madly poking multiple floor buttons while peeking her head out continuously as if looking for someone. At one point, she presses into one of the elevator corners as if hiding, and later she steps out and appears to be talking to someone again and gesturing with her hands. But no one is there, or not on the camera. I suppose I could choose to analyze the video logically and assume it is capturing the psychotic or drug-induced paranoia of an unbalanced woman who has gone missing, but I can’t help but entertain the spooky fascination that she is in fact talking to something that cannot appear on the camera. We can’t see it. Perhaps I’ve watched too many Paranormal movies. But it is the Hotel Cecil.

In more modern times, the Cecil became home to serial killers, such as the ‘Night Stalker’ Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger. Now the hotel is trying to reinvent itself by promoting its central location and affordable rates. You really should check out the reviews and photos online. Talk about bait-and-switch. The lobby is absolutely grand, pristine with gorgeous architectural details. But once you leave the lobby, things get grim (and grimy) in a hurry.

If you enjoy reading hotel horror stories, just Google it. Some politely refer to it as a “transient hotel” and others call it an outright dump. This gentleman has an excellent description of his stay there, entitled “A Dump with a Future.”

In a nutshell, the Cecil Hotel has never had a sterling reputation, even when it was known as the Hotel Cecil during my dad’s tenure there in the mid-1960′s. In 1962, a woman committed suicide by jumping from a room at the Cecil, also killing a pedestrian that she landed on below. Goldie Osgood, known as the “pigeon lady of Pershing Square” was choked to death in a room there in 1964. The case was never solved.

MISSING: William Yao Zhen Zhong

on .

William

Police have distributed pictures and information on 6-year-old William Yao Zhen Zhong to all state and district headquarters nationwide as they crank up efforts to locate the missing boy.

Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin said all entry and exit points in the country would be monitored in the event that he is spotted leaving the country.

"Investigations are ongoing as we are trying to ascertain the reason for his disappearance.

"Kidnapping has been ruled out for now as his parents have not received any ransom demands."Missing William Yao Zhen Zhong

Yao went missing on Wednesday at Jalan Putra Mahkota, Putra Heights, in Subang Jaya and his parents later lodged a police report after their attempts to search for him were in vain.

It is understood that a team of policemen, and the boy's father Yao Kok Kang, comb the area daily trying to locate him.

Thus far, there have been no news of his whereabouts.

"The National Urgent Response (NUR) Alert has also been activated in our efforts to locate Yao," Bakri said, adding the CID Sexual Crimes, Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Investigations Division (D11) was probing the case.

Kok Kang, who owns a motorcycle repair shop, said nothing was more important than seeing his second son, whom the family calls "Ah Zhong", again.

He said he had received many calls but not the one he had been waiting for.

"I just want someone to call and tell me that they have found my son. I want to hear my son call me 'Ah Pa' (Dad) again," he said at his home in Putra Heights here yesterday.

"I am prepared for the worst but still hoping for the best.

"The support I have received since my son's photograph was uploaded onto Facebook is also keeping me going."

Recounting the incident, Kok Kang said that he and his wife had just finished dinner with their three children -- his eldest son, Zhen Zhong, and his baby daughter.

They stopped at the Onking Electronics shop in Jalan Putra Mahkota and left the three children in the car.

He said that while they were gone, their daughter started crying and his eldest son tried to calm her down. This was when Zhen Zhong decided to leave the car and look for his parents.

"Being too preoccupied with the baby, our eldest son didn't stop his younger brother from leaving the vehicle.

"When we returned, my wife asked me why one child was missing," Kok Kang said.

"We searched everywhere, walking up and down the streets and shops looking for Zhen Zhong.

"We also asked the police to assist us but there was no sign of him."

The couple returned to their hometown in Malacca on Friday and left their eldest son and daughter with Kok Kang's parents so that they could concentrate on looking for their missing son.

Those with any information on Zhen Zhong can contact the Subang Jaya police at 03 56319800, Sergeant Goh Lai Thang at 012 219713, Putra Heights police head sub-Inspector Nordin Mustaffa at 012 315 0775 or Kok Kang at 016 9691616.
